About P/M Robert Mathieson...

Pipe Major Robert Mathieson has been at the forefront of piping and pipe bands for well over 30 years.  He started in Polkemmet Juveniles but has also served as Pipe Major of Polkemmet grade 1 pipe band.  In 1987 he took over as Pipe Major of the world famous Shotts and Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band, having been a young piper in the ranks of Shotts in the early seventies under Pipe Major Tom Mc Allister Jnr. He remained Pipe Major until August 2010.  During his reign he led the band to win over 30 major grade one championship titles including 5 world titles as well as 9 champion of champions titles. Making him the most successful prize winning pipe major that Shotts have appointed.  His music, including his own compositions, is played throughout the world by folk, celtic and Scottish country dance bands as well as many pipe bands.  A very unique signature of his work  is marked by the fact that he is the only Pipe Major to have won the worlds 5 times essentially playing his own compositions and arrangements, opening each winning medley with one of his own tunes.  He currently plays in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Robert has taught in workshops and piping clinics throughout the world, including France, Germany, Belgium, USA, South America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand as well as various cities in the UK. He has instructed overseas students  on examination courses for the " College of Piping ",  ran the training workshop for the pipers and drummers in the " Royal Canadian Air Force ",  been principal at the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association piping and drumming summer school and held the post as standards convener for the RSPBA music board for several years. He has also taught as a visiting lecturer at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama on the " Traditional Music Degree "  course.

Robert was a founder member/instructor and was instrumental in setting up the " North Lanarkshire School Traditional Music Programme " featuring the formation of the NLS pipe band. This project is highly successful with hundreds of pupils taking part. The band won the RSPBA  novice juvenile European championships. The band now has former pupils playing at the highest level in grade 1 pipe bands.

Robert studied at Heriot Watt University and Edinburgh College of Art where he gained an honours degree (MA) in " Art and Design " plus a post graduate diploma.
